THE LUCKY TICKET EP
Will Paddy Get Rich?
The first recording beyond the realms of smartphone technology.
The Lucky Ticket EP begins with two odes to lost ones with the opener 'White Flowers' portraying scenes of the moments running up to - and then the days, weeks and months after a funeral for someone you love. Originally a poem written by vocalist and lyricist Richard Buxton in 2003 after seeing an old school tutor all dressed in black (her husband had recently passed) and holding a bouquet all of white flowers, this song became the gentle, rolling and emotive opener for the record.
Followed up with Forest Fires, a song inspired by the final day of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot crew. The crew hiked out to meet the wildfire of Yarnell Hill, Arizona in June 2013. Having their primary task for the day done they were safe 'in the black', resting. But standing by watching was not good enough, they felt more could be done and so hiked on, to a course that lead them directly into the flaming front of the collosal flames. They may have helped save many lives and buildings, but paid for this dearly. This song, and this collosal riff and drum beat are WPGR's effort to honor those men.
Repeat comes next, an upbeat and driving, E-bow fuelled track filled with energy and vigour. The lyric repeats itself as the two verses copy each other directly as does the melody and pace of the track, until all changes for the grunge flavoured end section. Feelings of early Kasabian blend into a much more rockier vibe as this song saunters on to the ending question "That's all we got?" Repeat looks to challenge the mundane, repetitive everyday working-Joe life and connect with those hoping to find more from youth, life and rock and roll.
The final track 'H.A.F.' Or Heavy As F**k is a fast and compelling assault on the senses, as a guitar riff, as a drum track and as a punching bassline this song brings out the clenched toothed angry teen in all of us, saying 'what is that it?' to adult life and the idea of giving up on dreams to go on living only for the weekend - in essence living a lie.
